Minimizing Losses with Toll Management

The Challenge:
A trucking company was experiencing significant financial losses due to inconsistent toll management. Missing transactions, untracked expenses, and delayed reconciliations were creating inefficiencies and eroding profits. The company needed a solution to regain control but lacked the resources and direction to tackle the issue effectively.


The Approach:

  • Conducted a detailed analysis of their toll bill to identify discrepancies and inefficiencies in customer billing.
  • Used SQL to pull relevant data, including toll transactions to create a comprehensive view of the problem.
  • Reviewed various lanes where tolls were being incurred to identify opportunities to bill customers accurately and recover costs.

  • Reduced toll-related losses by $60,000-$80,000 monthly on average.
  • Assisted Accounts Payable with the toll bill allocation, which resulted in $20,000-$40,000 being attributed to individual terminals instead of hitting the general toll account. 
  • Allocated $8,000-$12,000 to terminals based on reviewing plate pulls which weren't tracking to toll transponders. Reducing the amount hitting the general toll account.
  • Collaborated with the Pricing department to create a proactive tool using the historical transaction information. Improving the pricing on RFPs to prevent losses before they happen.


The Takeaway:

This project demonstrates how tailored solutions can address even complex challenges like toll management. By combining expertise, data analysis, and process optimization, it’s possible to turn financial losses into measurable gains.
